Green Power

What is Green Power? Green power is a bundled product that includes electricity and renewable energy credits (REC). RECs are non-physical products that represent the avoided environmental impacts associated with renewable energy production. So when customers buy green power, they essentially are buying an energy product that has the lowest possible environmental impact. Green power is available in a wide variety of products and from a wide range of sources, including competitive energy suppliers in deregulated markets and utilities in regulated markets. In addition to RECs, a host of other products exist, such as carbon offsets and other similar greenhouse gas market products. How Ohms Energy Can Help Green Your Business The value of products such as RECs or energy efficiency credits (EEC) is determined by both voluntary and regulatory or enforced activities. The purchase of green power is an example of voluntary market demand, which has been a rapidly increasing market force. Regulatory forces are also increasing, as renewable portfolio standards (RPS) and energy efficiency portfolio standards (EEPS) proliferate at the local, state, and regional levels. RPS require utilities to meet specified levels of renewable energy in their generation portfolio, thus increasing the supply of wind, solar, biomass, and other renewable sources of electricity. EEPS require that utilities meet a certain portion of their annual increase in energy demand through energy efficiency. By increasing demand for renewable energy and energy efficiency, these standards generate additional RECs and EECs. Because the market in green power is still fragmented and immature (see map below), there can be confusion on the best way to proceed. Ohms Energy supports our customers’ green agenda with strategic consulting and procurement programs. We help our customers determine the most suitable strategy and product, and help them negotiate and secure competitive contracts for the provision of green power. Companies and organizations that want to establish and adhere to a green agenda can do so by tracking EECs and capturing the RECs related to energy efficiency, demand response, and renewable energy sources. Ohms Energy helps customers achieve their social responsibility and efficiency goals, by getting the most our of these developing environmental market instruments. Ohms Energy is successfully helping many committed organizations achieve their green agenda while effectively managing their costs. By considering corporate social responsibility in the development of their energy procurement strategy, our customers achieve more comprehensive and rewarding results.
